Back up and recover an OpenPGP key on the server

All topics · 03 · Encryption & protection · Deutsch

Where to find it

Preferences → Encryption → OpenPGP → Manage Keys

This stores an encrypted backup of the selected account’s private OpenPGP key on its server. It differs from publishing the public key and from a full DinoX data backup.

Importing or fetching a key from the server does not automatically activate it. After retrieval, check the key selected for this account and the mode it is published for.

What to do

  1. Open the correct account and your own key. Choose Backup Secret Key to Server.

  2. Copy the displayed backup code and keep it safe. Then confirm upload and wait for success. Exactly this code is required for recovery.

  3. On another device using the same account, choose Fetch Key from Server (Sync) and enter the backup code.

  4. Check fingerprint and account association. Deliberately confirm any selection or publication.

What do the choices mean?

Delete Server Backup

Removes only this encrypted server backup. Local keys and public-key publications remain.

Cleanup pending

Read the displayed status. If removal of the server backup is not yet confirmed, do not treat it as completed.
