MQTT: read device values and send commands

Where to find it

Preferences → MQTT (Standalone); or Accounts → account → MQTT Bot

MQTT is often used for sensors and home automation. The broker is the intermediary server. A topic is a named message destination, such as home/temperature. You need the operator’s details; an XMPP account alone is not access to an unrelated MQTT broker.

Standalone means a broker connection independent of your XMPP accounts. An account’s MQTT bot belongs to that account and can use a suitable XMPP-server MQTT service or a custom broker.

What to do

  1. Open the appropriate section. Enter broker address, port, TLS and required credentials as supplied by its operator.

  2. Enable and choose Save & Apply. Read connection status; Reconnect does not replace saving changed values.

  3. Open the MQTT Bot Manager and first subscribe to a known topic. Check the received value from an active sensor.

  4. Use Show Bot in Chat to open the local display. Configure publication and automation rules only after checking destinations.

What do the choices mean?

TLS and DNSSEC/DANE

TLS protects the connection to the broker. Without TLS, credentials and values on a remote connection may travel in plaintext. Additional DNSSEC/DANE settings belong to that broker connection.

Home Assistant Discovery

Announces DinoX as a device to the configured Home Assistant MQTT service. The discovery prefix must match its configuration. This does not replace broker credentials.
