The lock and the three message modes

Where to find it
Open a chat → lock beside the message field
The lock shows this chat’s setting. Select it to open the choices. Message encryption is separate from the secure connection to your server. The devices involved must also support the selected method.
The Encryption entry in a conversation’s context menu opens its keys and security settings directly. Conversation Details initially opens general information. Private groups have additional room and membership requirements.
What do the choices mean?
OMEMO
Encrypts for participants’ devices. Intended for normal use. Check new or changed device keys in Details.
OpenPGP
Requires configured keys and a compatible method at the contact. Account settings distinguish legacy OpenPGP from OpenPGP for XMPP.
Unencrypted
Without end-to-end encryption. A secure server connection does not prevent servers from processing message content. Select deliberately.
